Long Vowel Word Family Cards

Knowledge of word families helps children build vocabulary. Instead of memorizing spellings and meanings of all words, they learn how to spot patterns, identify root words, and understand their common meanings or sounds. This helps in word recognition leading to the development of their reading fluency.

The 20 long vowel word families included are:

• Long a: -ain, -ake, -ale, -ame, -ate, -ay
• Long e: -eak, -eat, -ee, -eep
• Long i: -ice, -ide, -ight, -y
• Long o: -oke, -old, -ore, -ow
• Long u: -ew, -oom

On each card, the word family is featured up at the top. Then there are 6 common words and pictures that fit within that word family. Some cards do not have blends and digraphs at the beginning and some do. The onset (beginning part) of the words are black and the rime (word family pattern) is red to help readers SEE the chunk in the word.
